Stop Procrastinating? Yes You Can!

Stop Procrastinating Now? Yes You Can!

I have a confession to make…

I am a recovering procrastinator.  NOTE that I’m not saying that I AM a procrastinator.  There is a difference.  You see, it is vitally important what you say and how you say it.  Words are important.  And what you say is even more important, but that is another topic…

In this article I want to show you two concepts that will help you stop procrastinating once and for all.

You Don’t Have To Get It Great…

Here is a quote by Mike Litman that will help you change your mindset about starting to get things done.

You Don’t have to get it great, you just have to get going

Here is how that works.  Those of us who are chronic procrastinators generally tend to look at the whole process of what we want to do and then because we are focussing on all the work that it will take to get the job done, and the pain of doing that work, we never get started.

Or we do get started, but only a little bit.  And we never follow up.  And we keep thinking about the WHOLE job and all that it will take and we never follow through.

For example, someone who wants to write an e-book should focus on writing their first page instead of focussing on writing the entire e-book.

So what we need to do instead is to break down the whole process into smaller steps.  Then in our minds it would seem easier and we would be much more likely to get started on that one simple, little piece of the whole puzzle.  We will feel confident that we can do these small baby steps.

It’s like starting a post secondary course and we think about ALL of the different assignments, and all of the studying, reading, researching and exam writing that it will take.  And we get paralyzed.  That may friends is called…

We analyze all of the components to the course that I listed above and it’s like our feet become stuck in cement and we can’t move.  We get nowhere.  Nothing gets done.  Nada.  Nothing.  And we cheat ourselves out of so much more in life.  We lose out in our careers, in our families, our marriages, and in virtually every other area of our lives.

How many of us are sabotaging ourselves everyday through procrasination?
I think that this applies to so many of us.  Some of us are good at doing the stuff at work that we need to do.  But we procrastinate in our personal life, in our marriage, or with our kids.

Simple little things that we leave undone.  Maybe even just taking out the garbage, washing the dishes.  Maybe we don’t wash our cars.  We don’t mow the lawn.  And on and on, the list is almost endless.

We are the thiefs of our own lives.  We are our own worst enemy.

And we see other people accompishing all kinds of things.  And we feel even worse.  We sink further.  And we put off another thing.

So instead of focusing on the process of getting our goals done and all of the steps involved, we should do the following.

What are the results, the benefits of what you want to do if you get it done?  How will it help you if you get that done?  How will it benefit you?  Why do you want to do it?  What is the end result?

For example when I started exercising and eating better, I had formed a picture in my mind of the type of body that I wanted to have and the fitness level that I wanted to attain.  This image motivated me to get started and to keep going.  I eventually lost about 23 pounds and got into the best shape of my life.  And I loved to hear the compliments from the people who noticed.

I want to challenge you to take a hard look at all of the things in your life that are not getting done that you would like to do.  And make a list of those things.

Now pick one of those items from that list and set a date to get started.  And don’t try to be perfect at it.  Break it down into bite-sized steps.  And most importantly, get started.

Find someone who you can be accountable to.  Give them permission to check up on you.   Having some source of accountability gives us another source of motivation, and propels us forward.

Here is what Ralph Waldo Emerson said,

Every artist was first an amateur

And Zig Ziglar challenges us to get started when he says,

If anythings worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly, until you can learn to do it well

We don’t expect a baby to be able to walk right away.  We know that they will learn over time and that they will fall as they learn.  But in the end they WILL walk.

And we need to learn that we go through a process of getting the things done in our life that we want to get done.  We shouldn’t expect to be perfect right off the bat.

Babe Ruth was a legend in baseball and he hit a record 714 home runs in 22 seasons.  But what many people don’t know is that he also struck out 1,330 times in his career.

So don’t focus on getting it perfect the first time, but just get started.  For example I have heard some people who used a cheap webcam on their computer when they first started creating videos that they posted on youtube.  And then a few months later they got a better video camera.  But they didn’t let the fact that they couldn’t get it perfect stop them.  They got started and did the best that they could with the tools that they had at that time.  And they progressed.

So just get started and do one thing that will move you forward toward your goals.  And if you want to really challenge yourself then pick one thing that you don’t want to do and do it.
